Delivering a Robust 360-Solution on the M22 Upgrade
/Leveraging Industry Expertise and Game-Changing Technology to Streamline Data Collection and Minimise Construction Delays
We were engaged in the M22-M46 Mitcham to Syndal Water Mains Renewal Project in Victoria from February 2022 to May 2024, where we provided extensive surveying, locating, and data analysis services. To tackle significant challenges associated with working in densely populated residential zones, we developed a comprehensive strategy aimed at facilitating the seamless progress of the project.
Challenges
The project presented several challenges, including the imperative to minimise public disruption in densely populated residential zones during construction activities.
Additionally, design-to-construction issues were noted, such as adjustments in pipe angles, lengths, and depths, were commonplace. These issues often necessitated amendments to the design, leading to delays of up to three weeks and substantial cost implications.
Our Solution
We deployed our team of experts comprising two full-time surveyors, one locator, and a data processing team.
The project started by completing a full detailed feature and level survey using a mixture of conventional survey methodology and incorporating SLAM (Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping) and Lidar technology, enabling real-time mapping in unknown environments.
SLAM's efficiency reduced survey time, crucial for minimising disruptions in residential areas. Its accuracy facilitated precise adjustments, enhancing project planning. Additionally, SLAM's automated mapping reduced risks, ensuring safer surveying conditions.

This initial survey laid the groundwork for subsequent phases, including a QL_B Underground services survey with data overlaid onto feature survey plans. We then worked with the client for clash analysis and conducted a QL_A service proving survey.
We collaborated with Rangedale, leveraging their NDD (Non-Destructive Digging) trucks, and provided both a locator and surveyor for data capture, ensuring a comprehensive 360-degree solution. All site data collected was compiled into a 3D model with both point cloud and CAD deliverables.
During the construction phase, we provided two full times surveyors, who played a pivotal role in conducting set-out works for new pipe installations, as well as pick-up and as-built collection of newly installed pipes. They also identified and marked conflicts with underground services, mitigating potential risks. Continuous monitoring for road movements during underground pipe installation further ensured project integrity.
Additionally, our surveyors conducted set-out works for infrastructure elements such as footpaths and fence lines. They also facilitated the survey set out of survey pillars used for calibration for all surveyors in Victoria. The team received commendable feedback, with the Surveyor-General for the Department of Transport and Planning Victoria noting: "Thanks for supporting us with the installation of the survey pillars and plates... The team nailed the alignment and the heights."
Outcome
Through the utilisation of our in-house capabilities, we effectively streamlined data collection without compromising quality. The incorporation of SLAM technology expedited on-site data collection and ultimately enhanced efficiency.
Our team ensured avoidance of project site construction down time or unaccounted delay costs. Asset Survey Solutions experienced surveyors & data management team are able to react and resolve any on-site issues.
The extensive experience of our surveyors in pipeline projects proved invaluable in addressing construction issues as they arose. Their adeptness in data management significantly reduced delays and costs for the client, ensuring the project progressed smoothly and within budget constraints.
Conclusion
Our comprehensive approach to data collection and management, coupled with their expertise in pipeline projects, proved instrumental in overcoming challenges and ensuring project success. By leveraging innovative technologies and drawing upon their wealth of experience, our team effectively navigated complexities and delivered results that exceeded client expectations.
